How to choose red meat for World Food Day

Dünya Gıda Günü

This year’s theme of World Food Day, which is celebrated every year on October 16, is “making healthy and sustainable nutrition accessible to all”. At this point, the key to a healthy and balanced diet is to choose the right product. When it comes to red meat, it is also difficult to find reliable information. Bonfilet, with more than a century of experience, shares with meat lovers what to consider when choosing red meat, from its color to the procurement process.

October 16, the founding date of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is celebrated every year as World Food Day. On World Food Day, which will be celebrated this year with the theme of healthy and sustainable nutrition, Bonfilet shares tips on choosing meat with consumers. Bonfilet COO and Food Engineer Kemal Bozkuş explained what to consider when choosing meat.

The color and smell of the meat gives itself away
There are a few important points to understand whether the meat you buy is suitable for consumption. The first of these is the color of the meat. Although not as much as a freshly slaughtered meat, the meat you buy should have a vivid and bright red color. Likewise, care should be taken to ensure that there is no excessive wetness and stickiness on the surface. It should not have a heavy odor unlike the unique smell of the meat, and it should not have the smell of medicine or disinfectant.

Must be examined by a veterinarian!
Bozkuş emphasized that the animals to be slaughtered must be examined by a veterinarian in order to prevent the possibility of health risks in the meat to be offered to the consumer, and emphasized that slaughtering, shredding and packaging must be carried out in facilities approved by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock.

Pay attention to the expiration date!
Inappropriate storage conditions create a favorable environment for the growth of harmful microorganisms on meat. During the procurement process, it should be ensured that it has been stored under cold chain conditions and that there is no damage on the packaging. If a frozen product is purchased, expiration dates should be checked. One of the points to be considered in terms of health is to divide the excess meat into disposable packages and keep them in the deep freezer.

The best seller is the seller you trust
The most important issue in food consumption is to be healthy and reliable. If you know where you buy your meat and choose a brand that you can witness every stage from production to your table, you can consume with confidence. With 114 years of experience, Bonfilet offers healthy and reliable food to those who love to eat meat with its products that have traceability at every stage.
